From the PTO Desk...

Special Thanks

We would like to thank everyone who attended our first PTO meeting of the school year. The turnout was wonderful, and we hope for even greater attendance for our next meeting on Friday, October 20th.

We would also like to thank everyone who was a part of UE's First Fall Festival. It was a great success! We are very grateful for the Fall Festival Chairs and Committee. Their hard work and dedication made for a very special day. We greatly appreciate all the teacher and parent volunteers who helped out and everyone who came to support the UE community. We already can't wait until next year!

Brain Based Strategies in Education and Growth Mindset Presentation

UCFSD, along with the Franklin Institute, invite all K-5 parents to attend a presentation on November 8, 2017 at 7pm at Pocopson Elementary School. Topics include memory, learning styles, attitude, studying, growth, grouping, and perseverance. See this flyer for more information and registration.

MLK Coin Challenge

Unionville Elementary will be holding a coin collection competition from October 2 - October 31, 2017. Students will compete to be the Grade Level that collects the most money in coins.  The coin competition will benefit our school wide Martin Luther King Day project and will be used to purchase materials needed to make fleece blankets (“Blankets for Buddies”) on MLK day.  The blankets along with other needed items will be donated to children with long term illnesses at AI Dupont Hospital.  A prize will be awarded for the grade level that has the “tallest” amount of coins on October 13th. The grand prize of a pizza party will be awarded to the grade level that can collect the most money at the end of the competition!

Donations Still Being Accepted for PTO Direct Donation Program

In order to continue providing materials and services that the PTO provides to our students, we are asking for direct contributions to be made to the school from each family. We are asking for all families, who are able, to be generous, and to contribute a suggested amount of $50 per child attending UE. More, of course, is welcome, and no amount is too little. The direct donation program is in response to parental input about not wanting to sell a variety of items throughout the school year. 100% of your donation will go to our school.
Please fill out the Direct Donation Request Form in your back-to-school mailing or at the link below, and return it to school with your tax-deductible donation.
We thank you in advance for helping us in our fundraising efforts.

Yearbook Photos Request

Did you take some beautiful shots at the 1st UE Fall Festival? Do you have some fantastic photos of the first day of school? Do you have some great shots from Field Day 2017? The UE Yearbook would love to include some of your photos in this year's yearbook. Please upload your photos to the UE yearbook community library through Lifetouch Yearbooks here. Our school's access code is WWJAAJ.

Stars for Service

We are looking for two people to run UE's community service club. Boys and girls of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade are invited to donate their time for the good of our community. During the monthly meetings (November to May), the students participate in different service projects. In the past, Stars for Service has conducted a food drive, created holiday decorations, maintained a food garden at UE, and donated bag lunches. We depend on volunteers to organize the meetings and projects. Please sign up and help UE students learn that all of us can make a difference in our community.

Homeroom Parents Needed

Homeroom parents are still needed for a few classes at UE. If you have a child in any of the classes below, please consider volunteering and helping out. It will be greatly appreciated.

Mrs. Robinson (2)
Mrs. Weigand (2)

The job of homeroom parent varies from classroom to classroom, but the main job is to be the liaison between the parents and the teacher. The homeroom parent is not to “do everything," but to recruit other parents in the class to support the teacher with activities a teacher cannot do on his or her own, such as field trips and class parties. It is a great way to meet the children in your child’s class, as well as other parents, and to be involved in your child’s education. If you are interested in being a homeroom parent for your child’s class (we need at least one, preferably two for each classroom), please notify Heather Biddle as soon as possible at biddlejewelry@yahoo.com

Library Volunteers Needed

The UE Library needs volunteers on Mondays or Wednesdays.  This is a 1 to 2 hour commitment, twice a month. Volunteers are needed to help keep our library organized by re-shelving books, straightening shelves, and helping with special library projects. Email Julie Block at jblock@ucfsd.net for more information.

Dine and Donate to Help Houston

The Funky Waffle is headed to Houston! UCFSD family, the Cawleys, have donated their RV, affectionately called The Funky Waffle, to a Houston family to live in while they rebuild their lives after Hurricane Harvey. Local neighbors and community business owners have donated their time and services to get the RV ready for its journey – now it’s your turn to help.
Sovana Bistro is hosting a “Dine and Donate” fundraiser on Sunday, September 10th, from 4:30pm – 9:00pm to support the cause. Dine in or take out. Just be sure to mention that you’re “dining for The Funky Waffle RV” and 20% of your bill will be donated to The Funky Waffle ‘Houston or Bust’ campaign. To make this fundraiser even tastier, Sovana Bistro will make a matching contribution. To learn more about The Funky Waffle’s journey to Houston, visit this website.

Committee Chair Volunteer Opportunity

The PTO is looking to fill some chair/co-chair positions for the 2017/18 school year:

Stars For Service - Community Outreach (Assist with community service projects, such as UE garden, brown bag lunch program, etc.)
UE Staff Appreciation Day (Organize teacher and staff luncheon in the spring)
Hospitality / New Family Welcome
Blue Rock tickets
Curriculum Council (Represent UE at UCFSD Curriculum Council meetings)

Please check the sign-up. We depend greatly on volunteers, so if no one signs up to run these programs, we will not have them for the upcoming school year.
