WELCOME TO THE 2016-17
SCHOOL YEAR!

FROM THE PTO DESK..

Welcome, UE Families!

Welcome UE Families to the 2016/17 school year! The teachers and staff have been busy getting the building ready, and there is a wonderful energy in the hallways just waiting for the students to arrive. We wanted to take some time before the school year begins to let you know about our Parent Teacher Organization, and how you can support our efforts this upcoming year. We hope that you will be a part of our PTO, to whatever extent you are able, and we understand that often work schedules can make it difficult to attend the monthly meeting. There are numerous other opportunities for you to be a part of our team. We always need volunteers to send in requested items, help run evening activities, and aid in the planning of activities.  Please read the weekly Star News by e-mail or on the PTO page of the school website www.ues.ucfsd.org, and "LIKE" the Unionville Elementary School Facebook page, to stay informed on upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, and to celebrate our school successes.

The PTO at Unionville Elementary is very active, and all are welcome to participate, whether it be on a regular basis, or for a particular event. Our purpose is to support the teachers in the classroom setting, raise funds for supplemental materials and experiences, support school and family social interaction, provide services to the parent community, afford enhanced cultural experiences, and provide a non-biased forum for sharing information on issues that impact our children. Our fundraising efforts aim to support these causes.

Our first PTO meeting will be on September 16th, at 9:30 a.m. We hope to see you there. Please know that your opinions and time are always appreciated.

-The UEPTO Board

PTO Direct Donation Program
In order to continue providing materials and services that the PTO provides to our students, we are asking for direct contributions to be made to the school from each family. We are asking for all families, who are able, to be generous, and to contribute. Our donation request is for $50 per child attending UE. This is just a suggested amount. More, of course, is welcome, and no amount is too little. Our reason for asking for direct donations this year is in response to parent requests to not sell a variety of items throughout the school year, and frequently asking, "Can't I just write a check?". So, yes, you can! 100% of your donation will go to our school, which is also in response to parental input.

Please fill out the Direct Donation Request Form in your back-to-school mailing or at the link below, and return it to school with your tax-deductible donation. We thank you in advance for helping us in our fundraising efforts, and we are looking forward to the exciting school year ahead.

Get Involved in PTO-related Activities
In your back-to-school mailing and at the link below, we have also included a list of ways you can get involved in PTO-related activities Check off any that are of interest to you, and return these forms to the school's main office, attention UEPTO, by September 1st.

2016/17 Committee Chairs
The PTO is looking to fill some chair/co-chair positions for the 2016/17 school year. Please check the sign-up and put your name next to any event that you are interested in chairing. We depend greatly on volunteers, so if no one signs up to run these programs, we will not have them for the upcoming school year. If you are able, please consider chairing or co-chairing a committee.

Homeroom Parents Needed
Are you interested in being a homeroom parent?

The job of homeroom parent varies from classroom to classroom, but the main job is to be the liaison between the parents and the teacher. The homeroom parent is not to "do everything
," but to recruit other parents in the class to support the teacher with activities a teacher cannot do on his or her own, such as field trips and class parties. It is a great way to meet the children in your child's class, as well as other parents, and to be involved in your child's education. If you are interested in being a homeroom parent for your child's class (we need at least one, preferably two for each classroom), please notify Heather Biddle, by Thursday, September 1, at biddlejewelry@yahoo.com. We would like to announce homeroom parents at Back to School Night on September 7th.

Acts of Kindness

In an e-mail to US parents over the summer, our Principal, Dr. Michelle Lafferty, encouraged students and staff to perform giving or kind deeds while wearing a UE shirt if possible. If you have photos of your child performing a kind act, please send them to Dr. Lafferty at mlafferty@ucfsd.net.

with treats and a smile.

Cub Scout Pack-22 is looking for new members!

Cub Scout Pack 22 has been serving Unionville and its surrounding communities since 1924.

Cub Scouting is fun! No matter what grade you are in, first through fifth, it can be a blast. Do you like to learn by doing? This is just the place. You can learn to tie knots, set up a tent, or shoot a bow and arrow (archery). Have you ever cooked a meal on a campfire? Sent a secret code to a buddy? Raced a car or boat you built with your own hands? Hiked? Have fun and earn rewards for doing these things in Cub Scouts.

If your son is interested in learning more about the Cub Scouts, please reach us through pack22@cccbsa.org or our Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/Cub-Scouts-Pack-22-Unionville-PA-541976179297129/. We will also have several events early next school year for you to check out what scouting is all about!

Adventure is waiting. BUILD YOURS.

FROM THE PTO DESK...

Well, we have almost made it! The last few weeks of school are always jammed packed with activities, and I would like to thank all UE families for their support in making them memorable. Very soon the kiddos are all yours for the summer! We hope that it is a time for your family to create wonderful memories of your own, and to savor your time together (and by August, I am sure we will all be looking forward to their return to the amazing teachers and staff here at UE). Thank you so much for all of your time and dedication to the numerous PTO events that were held throughout this school year. We truly could not have done it without you. See below some special events still taking place, and mark them on your calendars now (there are only a couple, I promise!).

Volunteers are needed for Field Day, so please take a look at the Sign-Up to see if you can help in any way.

A special thanks to the PTO Board Members who will be stepping down this year, Michelle Reichert, Dana Mayer, Jacqui Detweiler, Stacey Angstadt, and Amy Kidd-Suplick. You are all talented, giving, generous and dedicated, and without you, this year would not have been the great success it has been. We would also like to bid a heartfelt farewell to those families who will be leaving us this year, whether it be to a new elementary school, or having your child go off to middle school. We hope that your time at UE has been a wonderful experience, and that you come back to visit often. And last but not least, a huge thank you to the teachers and staff at UE. You make our school a place that students want to come every day, and welcome parents with open arms. We appreciate your hard work and dedication, and hope you enjoy a much deserved summer break!

Dear UE Community:

We are writing today to ask you to join us in celebrating and thanking Mrs. Michelle Reichert as she concludes her outstanding service as the UEPTO President in her fifth and final year of UEPTO Board service.

Under Mrs. Reichert's leadership, the UEPTO has accomplished tremendous strengthening of the UE community and spirit.  Mrs. Reichert spearheaded the highly successful UEPTO Fashion Shows, which over three years raised more than $35,000 collectively.  Additionally, Mrs. Reichert personally oversaw the implementation of the Boosterthon Fun Runs, which have raised over $25,000 collectively in two years.  Concurrently, Mrs. Reichert and the UEPTO Board upheld long-standing PTO programs such as Family Fun Night, Bingo Night and the Third Grade Book Celebration while increasing enrichment spending to over $30,000 in the last two years alone—making possible the gymnasium Rock Wall, new auditorium lighting, specialized rocker chairs, additional classroom books, supplemental materials for math, science and social studies curricula, teacher enrichment requests, student assemblies and more!  Mrs. Reichert's leadership positioned the UEPTO in the firmest possible financial standing while making possible remarkable educational enrichment opportunities for UE students and teachers alike.

While the facts and figures underscore Mrs. Reichert's effectiveness as UEPTO President, her warm personal connections and endless outreach and graciousness toward all will remain in our hearts and minds for years as we remember her tenure.  Mrs. Reichert espouses the belief that the UEPTO is the parent representative arm of the educational community that surrounds our children, and she sought in all she did to strengthen and accurately represent the parent perspective for the betterment of the UE school community.  She did so lovingly and selflessly, and we are very grateful.

Will you please join us in extending thanks to Mrs. Reichert?  Will you click here to send her a brief personal message of thanks or thanking her in person the next time you next see her?

Mrs. Reichert, or, as many of us know her, Michelle, reminds us daily to "smile," and "challenge yourself," and to "be the change you wish to see."  Let us take to heart her words of wisdom, and seek in all we do to be the best parents – and people – we can be.

We also extend a warm welcome to Meg Cromer, experienced board member, as the 2016-2017 UE PTO President. Amongst her extensive contributions to the UEPTO, was the new, very successful and fun spring event, "Designer Bag Bingo".

In addition, we present the newly elected board members for the 2016-2017 school year.

  • President: Meg Cromer
  • Vice President: Kristen Young
  • Treasurer: Ed Oexner
  • Secretary: Micki Tilley

  • Director of Website: Sunanda Aurora
  • Director of Communications: Kate Tomasco
