A Letter from our Principal

April 2015

Greetings Unionville Families,

Spring is finally in the air.  I'm speaking for all of us when I say I hope it stays there.  May our return from Easter Break mean many days of sunshine and outdoor recess! March Madness is coming to a close and April Assessments are coming up. I'm talking about, of course, our annual season of state assessments.  Our Third, Fourth, and Fifth Graders will take the English Language Arts portions of the PSSA beginning on April 13th and continuing the week of April 20th , they will take the Math portion.  Fourth Graders will take the Science section on 4/28 and 4/29.  Students are reminded to get plenty of sleep and enjoy a hardy breakfast on those days, certainly good to do everyday. They are invited to bring a water bottle and a healthy snack for our testing mornings.  They may also enjoy chewing gum or a hard candy while testing.  This has been shown to boost brainpower!  Please help us convey to your children that while the tests are an important opportunity to "show what they know", we do not want any child to worry or feel anxious about them.  Our students, your children, are very well prepared, and I am exceedingly confident that they will do just fine.  While they will be faced with interesting challenges on the assessments, they might even tell us that some parts of the test seem easy. After the winter we've endured, I'll return to the topic of spring.  Our students and staff are looking forward to a good number of exciting assemblies, field trips, activities, fun events and opportunities, and other "out-of-desk" learning opportunities for children of all ages this last third of the school year. We are most grateful for the tremendous support of our UEPTO volunteers who make so many of those things possible.  I would also like to remind everyone that we'll be outside as often as we can for recess.  Please continue to send children to school dressed in comfortable layers so as to be ready for the variable temperatures of breezy spring days.

Continued thanks for our partnership in this terrific school community.
