Art in Action: Volunteers Needed

(No Art Experience Required!)

Unionville Elementary Art in Action is a parent-run program in coordination with UE's art teacher, Mrs. McQuillin, that integrates art appreciation and school beautification projects each year. This year we are excited to be exploring the theme of Impressionism and the Effects of Light, focusing on such artists as Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Seurat. This is a wonderful program offering an opportunity for parents to spend time with classes in the art room discussing famous artwork.

The Art in Action program will take place this year from Tuesday, February 28 until Tuesday, March 3. Please see the Sign-Up Genius link below to sign up for specific time slots. No art or art history experience is required. Volunteers may sign up for more than one class. Mrs. McQuillin will meet with all volunteers on Tuesday, February 21 after school at 3:30pm in the Art Room to provide additional support and review all materials. Volunteers will need appropriate clearances. If you have any questions, contact Sharon Buck at

Coaches Needed for Girls on the Run

Unionville Elementary School is hoping to re-establish its Girls on the Run team, which did not participate last fall due to a lack of coaches. The Girls on the Run program is for girls in grades 3-5 who are willing to set a goal and work towards achieving it. The organization's mission is simple: "to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running."

Coaches need not be runners themselves, but rather caring, compassionate individuals who are willing and able to deliver a pre-established curriculum over the course of 12 weeks. Anyone interested in coaching or even just looking for more information can contact Joy Zdebski at the YMCA of Greater Brandywine ( Registration is scheduled to begin February 6 so don't delay!

We need your old sneakers and fitness shoes!

The Green Initiatives Committee of the Unionville-Chadds Ford Education Foundation is collecting your used sneakers and fitness shoes!

Please drop off your old sneakers - any size, any condition - to the box in UE's main lobby.

Collected shoes from our District will be shipped to Runners Village, Ghana. There they are sold, and the proceeds go to setting up tree farms (fruit trees, trees used for buildings, etc.) in the village. The locals are trained to maintain the farms, creating a perpetual source of income. The unusable shoes (about 20%) go to Nike Grind, where they are ground up and used on playgrounds and for other purposes. This program keeps shoes out of the landfill and promotes re-use, as well as develops an environmentally and economically sustainable industry for developing villages.

This is an ongoing program, and the collection box will remain in the lobby throughout the year.

For more information go to or see flyer.
